What Campus Doesn't Teach You

When I started my final year at Sri Krishna College of Technology, I had a rough idea of where I wanted to go — but no real map to get there. This is that map, written in hindsight.

The Placement Grind

It started with LeetCode. 250+ problems, mostly in Java and Python, grinding DSA while simultaneously trying to build projects that were actually worth talking about in interviews. The honest truth? Aptitude caught me off guard early on. Don't sleep on it.

The Cognizant selection process had three rounds — Aptitude, Communication, and a Coding round with SQL, HTML/JS, and one LeetCode Easy. Nothing impossible, but preparation matters.

Digital Nurture — The Bridge

Getting through selections wasn't the finish line. It was the start of the Digital Nurture program — 8 weeks of structured training covering Java fundamentals, SOLID principles, Spring Boot, React, Git, and design patterns.

Two evaluations during training — one midway, one at the end — both interviews assessing your learning and the academic project assigned during the program. It's intense but incredibly valuable.

Clear the MCQ, clear the technical interview, and you move into GenC Next.

Life as an Intern

8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Ten hours a day. Free pantry, scrum masters, tech leads, and leadership connects. It's a real corporate environment from day one.

Our team built a full-stack Bank Management System — Spring Boot microservices, Spring Cloud, JWT authentication, and a React.js frontend. We also delivered an AML transaction monitoring module with JUnit 5 and Mockito test coverage across microservice boundaries.

I took on peer team lead responsibilities among 5 interns. Nobody handed me the role — I just started showing up with ownership and the team responded to it.

The AI Shift Nobody Talks About

Here's what I'd add if I were advising anyone right now — learn RAG and Agentic AI.

Every company is moving in this direction. You don't need to be an expert. Build a simple RAG chatbot using LangChain and any LLM API. Understand how agentic workflows work. It will set you apart from 90% of candidates.

What I'd Tell My Junior Self

• Start projects before placement season, not during it
• Build end-to-end — not just algorithm problems
• Soft skills matter as much as your code, especially in interviews
• Show up with ownership, communicate clearly, and be consistent

The path from campus to corporate isn't a straight line — but it's absolutely worth every late night and every bug that refused to be fixed.
